06 Jun Leaders Embrace Chaos
“As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.” -Albert Einstein
I spoke to a group of Nigerian-American leaders on Saturday, May 21st, 2016 at the ” Impact Your World Leadership Initiative” in Houston, TX . In particular, I spoke on why today’s global leaders must embrace CHAOS. Here are some reasons why:
- Globalization 3.0
- Technological Advancement – IoT, AI, Internet, Trade & the effect on the new workplace and work life
- Global economic challenges
- The year 2050 and the projected population growth
- The implication of a population explosion and how Nigeria moves from the 7th most populous country in the world to the 4th by 2050
Today we are experiencing significant changes such as:
- The ongoing blurred lines Between Humans and Machine –e.g. SIRI, CORTANA, GOOGLE NOW, WATSON, ROSS, MALUUBA
- Increasing Business and Global Complexities & Automation
- Ongoing disruptions in many industries and sectors e.g. Health, Education, Aviation, Transportation, Energy etc
- Additionally, we are also experiencing generational changes and in particular the world where millennials (ages 18-34) will constitute 75% of Workforce by 2025
- According to the World Economic Forum, the jobs of the future requires pertinent skill sets.
The Future Of Jobs:
What Is CHAOS?
CHAOS is the science of surprises (VUCA), of the nonlinear and the unpredictable. It teaches us to expect the unexpected. Chaos Theory deals with nonlinear things that are effectively impossible to predict or control, like turbulence, weather, the stock market, our brain states, and so on.
Chaos theory provides and helps to understand the complex conceptual framework of industries and while long term forecasting is almost impossible for chaotic systems, there are short-term possibilities.forecasting is possible. Chaos theory helps organizations, industries and individuals to cope with complexities.
EMBRACE CHAOS – The Urgency Of The Present
“We are living in an amazingly disruptive, rapidly changing, extremely confusing time.” – Flo
Globalization Factors driving advancement and chaos include:
- Market Trends
- Economic Opportunities
- Connectivity
- Internet
The urgency of the present means that global leaders must embrace chaos and continually ride the waves. It is important to note that chaotic leadership must be deliberately taught and integrated into any economic development or leadership engagement, training, and curriculum.
In conclusion, I challenged these global leaders to stop waiting for the tides to fall, or for a perceived state of normalcy but rather to embrace the uncertainty, change, havoc, madness, disorder, breakdown, perceived impossibility. Oh by the way, here’s one way to start…ask questions.
